Cayenne

Why is it that Red Bull can kill and coffee can't?
There's more news about Red Bull killing people, or causing strokes or stuff than coffee. Coffee has a higher caffeine content than Red Bull (80 mg) A Starbucks grande even has 300+ mg of caffeine. Lots of people drink coffee 6 times a day and most of them don't suffer the effects Red Bull is giving to the people in the news.
Red Bull seems to be more dangerous than coffee is. What is it exactly in Red Bull which makes it dangerous? Which ingredient is it? And what makes coffee less dangerous even if it has a higher caffeine content?

Red Bull, and many other "energy drinks" also contain Taurine, an amino acid which has very different effects to caffeine. Caffeine is a stimulant which works on your brain to, in essence make you feel more awake (amongst other things), Taurine, on the other hand works primarily in protecting the membrane of, and arguably improving the effectiveness of, cells sending and receiving a lot of electrical impulses, such as the heart, as well as being claimed to have detox properties too. Together, these two chemicals mean you feel more alert and FEEL able to exercise more, and better.
The reason Red Bull and other drinks are implicated in health concerns is twofold.
Firstly, there is no real scientific research into interactions between caffeine and Taurine. These two chemicals could, theoretically, cause a lot of the described side effects... though nothing has ever definitively proved this.
The second, more likely reason is, people are not sensible. People mix Red Bull with things like exercise, or alcohol.
When mixed with exercise, the problem is that it doesn't replenish the bodies lost nutrients and energy, and can dehydrate you, which causes additional strain on the heart. Essentially, it tricks your brain into thinking your body can do more than it is actually able to, and can cause problems, especially if there are preexisting conditions affecting the heart.
People also regularly mix Red Bull (a stimulant, and a diuretic, which can dehydrate you) with Alcohol (a depressant, and also a diuretic), in order to offset the hang-over effect. The problem is, mixing depressants and stimulants can also cause irregular heart beats and odd heart signals, and can cause real problems. Added to that with the dehydration (which means you want to drink more) and the stimulant effects (you need more alcohol to get the same buzz) people drink excessive amounts of alcohol, which can lead to liver problems, and of course increased chances of driving drunk (you feel more awake and alert than you actually are) and you can see why Red Bull has it's killer reputation.
However, it is, for the most part very safe in moderation for people with no heart conditions, though i can't recommend regularly mixing it with alcohol.
